{"id":112,"date":"2019-04-22T16:14:25","date_gmt":"2019-04-22T16:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bigbeanbag.net\/andythings\/?p=112"},"modified":"2021-01-13T15:46:38","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T15:46:38","slug":"dominion-card-holders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bigbeanbag.net\/andythings\/2019\/04\/22\/dominion-card-holders\/","title":{"rendered":"Dominion Card Holders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Dominion is a card game&nbsp; where players get to &#8220;buy&#8221; new cards and build their own deck to try to get points.&nbsp; In the middle of the table between all the players are 10 piles of cards that you can purchase.&nbsp; We like playing this game because it has fairly simple base rules but can get quite interesting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought it would be nice to have a <strong>card holder <\/strong>in the middle of the table, and there are many people on the internet that have made very fancy versions but I find them too big or too expensive.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had always planned\nto make this, but because it was going to involve lots of fiddly cutting with\nthe jigsaw it never made it to the forefront of my mind \u2026 until I found out\nabout the local library&#8217;s laser cutting machine. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"389\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bigbeanbag.net\/andythings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dom-cards-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-255\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bigbeanbag.net\/andythings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dom-cards-01.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.bigbeanbag.net\/andythings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dom-cards-01-300x146.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bigbeanbag.net\/andythings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dom-cards-01-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>I first made a quick test to see if it would be deep enough.  I also wanted to try etching something so I did that at the same time. The etching looks pretty good.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> I made the design on the computer and then brought a piece of 1\/4&#8243; plywood to the library.&nbsp; It took two passes &#8211; one pass to etch the images on the wood, and then the second to actually cut the pieces out.&nbsp; It was technically really easy. I should have done a stain\ntest first though, because the darkness of the stain kind of obscures the\netchings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>(photo missing &#8211; oops)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, since I\nam making a nice holder for the center Kingdom cards, might as well make a\nfancy holder for the money and points cards too !&nbsp; you can&#8217;t see the bottom of the cards in the back row, and this is where the &#8220;cost&#8221; is marked on each card.&nbsp;&nbsp; Oh well &#8211; time to get rid of this cheap-feeling-thing-that-I-can&#8217;t-see-the-etchings-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I was laser\ncutting some boards of cherry for my TAK project, I redesigned and added the\nextra parts I needed into that print job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick visit to the local specialty wood shop to get a board of cherry, some updating of the design files to accommodate the smaller width of wood and the 1\/4&#8243; thickness, and I was back in the library cutting out the pieces.&nbsp; Note that I actually didn&#8217;t go to the library specifically for this &#8211; I was making my TAK board and box and was trying to maximize the use of the wood that I was putting into the laser cutter.&nbsp;
